I personally have no issues with this type of thing. In fact i'm a bit jealous I can't get mine like that. I'm sure I used to but I just can't remember what i changed to get it so...

Thoughts? Is this a tweak to far?
Terrynator
A lot of the players use these settings. There has been much debate over the years. Some lan competitions disallow it.

For me? I find it a bit irritating that people need to go this far for an extra frag or two.
I just find it so butt ugly and lowers my enjoyment of the game to much to be worth that extra frag I might get, so I won't use it. dntknw.gif

Didn't know people could play Quake3 from a commodore 64 laugh.gif

Ermm, I dunno. If anyone goes to that trouble for a tweak, I say legit. I couldn't imagine playing like that, you head would split in half after an hour or two.

I don't see anything wrong with any of those. they are just using r_picmip and r_vertexlight or combinations of all that. I change these settings around to the maximum advantage I can for whatever mod i'm playing. heck with r_gamma and r_intensity you can almost get the whole background to merge into a solid color if you play with ur monitor settings a bit....makes picking out models a little easier. as long as the command is coded into quake, let people use it. i hate connecting to a server to get kicked for r_picmip at 5. thats just dumb lol. i can see cvars for exploits that cause damage to the server, but not silly things like video settings. i'll say let people tweak their systems like they want, thats the point of getting more knowledgable in the game.

ah, q3 is such a breath of fresh air. ok.gif

I like the fact that tweakage is part of the game. Knowlege is power etc.

Honestly, if you'd made that suggestion in the cod/coduo forum you'd be hounded to your grave. They get upset about "com_maxfps 125" and "r_fastsky 1" unbelievable tbh.
Veire
Tbh I don't mind any cvars being used that isn't protected by sv_cheat 1 or that weren't manually changed in any way and of course it has to be inside the limits smile.gif

Never really minded any seeing me .200 seconds faster because they had a tweak like r_subdivisions
Never used much of those cvars myself, I like my Graphics high and I'm too dumb to try the smarter cvars wink.gif

lol basically to tweak i either look up command lists online, or sit in a private server and type r_, hit tab, and go thru the whole list and see what each one does. problem is i never remember lol. i know there is command you can even stop drawing textures on any map! LOL first time i saw that screenshot from PB i thought this guy has a clienthook...but them I was able to get it to work myself...hehehe I dunno how anybody could play like that, I tried and couldn't find jumppads or walls or stairs or anything lol.

the point is that as long as its native to the game its fine. max_fps greater than 125 does no help in q3 anyway...125 is best for strafing and running. besides no matter what game it is, the server can only send u so much data at a time...in other words, so many fps at a time.

the thing that makes tweaking so fun is that every command has a strength and a weakness. No matter what settings u get there is always a downside. you use r_picmip 8, u cant see jumppads or wall markings. the question then becomes can u live with that and does it effect your game....and so on for each command you tweak. r_vertexlight is great for some maps, but then again it disables the flag glow that helps pick people out from behind a wall....etc...etc.

hey as long as players aren't injecting things into the game with a clienthook or opengl cheat or trying to crash the server...i could care less what settings they use.

that's sv_fps. different. and anyway play on my server. there is no fps limits. I have my game locked to 333 and it's great!

dm6, from the curved path (rocket) to the RA spawn. 1 jump. 1! smile.gif and I don't have any straf skills. That's purely down to 333 fps.

talking of the RA spawn, the jp at that area. with 333 fps your head almost hits the roof, that's about 3 - 4 model heights higher than 125fps. This is of course the downside of 333. You can fly but when being railed, in the air is not the best place to be smile.gif

heheh i noticed this when i upgraded my video card a while back blink.gif i can strafe much nicer now with the Radeon9800Pro biggrin.gif than a GF2 lol.

i actually made a script to toggle fps between 80 and 125 for jumps, so i could duck away quicker without getting shot in the air if there is a ceiling i would hit wallbash.gif it turned out to be more fuss than it was worth, might as well just aim and shoot the person thats tryin ta get ya! hehehe q3's gotta be one of the best games ever tongue.gif
Terrynator
Ya Q3 is considered a game for the hardcore players. Most people I know just accept stuff like this and some use these settings. Other games I can see people being more upset.
Q3 is all about speed. It's the nature of the game being the fastest fps out there. smile.gif
Air time via fps adjustment is not good as pointed out. You's get your ass railed if not careful. boff.gif

I am with 'neck on the issue of tweaks, though you still do find some that oppose certain ones in some mods. Talk to some people about cl_timenudge and they will almost froth at the mouth giving their take on it, lol. As long as it is native and does not affect the performance of the server or what the other players see/do, then it is all good.
Assneck
yea no kidding, some people are hardcore about that timenudge stuff. i can't see using anything lower than -20....anything lower and players skip around way to much to even shoot. on our server we do run a few restrictions to avoid people purposefully lagging themselves. its really annoying when you get a player with a lag script that adjusts the packets and rate when they get the flag....skippy bastids.
